Institute for Biology, Ecology and Nature Conservation

Institute of Biology, Ecology and Nature Conservation is a separate unit of researchers from the Department of Biology, FNM Maribor. Members are involved in basic as well as applicative research in the fields of biology, ecology and nature conservation. We focus on the research in the fields of plant and animal taxonomy (Opiliones, Neuroptera, mammals, birds etc…). We study insect and human histology, physiology of plants and insects, insect ethology, biotechnology and didactics of biology. We do a lot of research in the field of ecology of plants and animals and study interactions between them. Researchers also focus on landscape and vegetation ecology and speleobiological research.

Applicative part of our research covers methods of practical teaching (didactics of biology), transfers of knowledge to pupils of primary and secondary schools, conservation biology, reconstruction of degraded environments, inventories of local fauna and flora conservation purpose, habitat type mapping, etc.

The institute educates young staff and is a group member of ARRS (Public Research Agency of the Republic of Slovenia). Members of the institute take part of both national and international projects.
